Beginner’s Guide to Selling on Depop
If you’ve used the Depop app before, you’ve likely discovered some of the hidden gems the site has to offer (and the steal of a price that most of these treasures are offered at). It’s no doubt that the app presents an easily accessible platform to find unique pieces and great deals. So, what about selling?
I dove head-first into the world of selling on Depop, and I can confirm that it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. A lot of skeptics allow the fees charged by the app to deter their interest from participating in the fun. Although I understand the hesitations, I was able to generate more net revenue on Depop than all of the other approaches I tried (I.e., Poshmark, Buffalo Exchange, Plato’s Closet, etc.).
I’m nowhere close to being a certified Depop seller, and I’m certainly not an expert on the topic. However, I was able to generate passive income during the hectic years spent as a desperately broke college student, and the money wasn't the only perk. I was able to successfully clean out my closet slowly and sustainably over the years, while selling products at great prices to excited buyers. It was a win-win. Depop’s blog has a load of helpful tips to get started, but I’ve summarized some key discoveries made throughout my journey.
Here are 5 things I learned that made selling on Depop fun and easy.
5. Make a Profit
It seems trivial, I know. However, when you’re setting your item’s price, the shipping and fees should be regarded before pressing “post.” In the beginning, it may seem like a top is truly only worth $5, and that may be so. Regardless, it’s important to note that if shipping is included, this is an additional service that adds value to your listing. So, your price should definitely be adjusted accordingly. If things aren’t selling, change your settings to offer bundle deals that’ll help your items look more attractive!
4. Spice it Up
Adding in fun stickers every now and then or decorating the packaging makes it more of an activity than an obligation. By putting some artistic flare into the mix, it can double as a beneficial creative outlet.
3. Communication is Key
Responsiveness to private messages and inquiries can play a huge role in the rating that buyers give you when it’s all said and done. Personally, the seller’s rating is a big factor in my decision to make a purchase or not. So, to ensure you’re doing everything right to get those 5 stars, practice all of your best communication skills.
2. Hashtags are Underrated
Having a fun, enticing description about the item is so helpful for effectively advertising your product. However, making sure your item is as noticeable as possible is the first step. So, use as many hashtags as possible that you feel will attract the most relevant target audience to that specific item.

I can’t say the images you use in your listings are everything, but it’s a pretty close call. Having quality photos of your product is vital to making it stand out and making it wanted. It’s also important to have a variety of angles, so potential buyers can feel confident about how it should look at all angles. This is the fun part! Getting creative with 1.5x zoom on your selfie lens and a homemade tripod is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the opportunities here.
